Sun Spots

Sun Spots in Columbus, OH

Also known as solar lentigines, sun spots are dark patches or spots that appear on the skin after repeated sun exposure. Downtown Dermatology offers sun spot removal treatments for men and women in the Greater Columbus area.

What are Sun Spots?

Sun spots begin as slightly darker patches or spots on the skin. As you continue to expose the area to sunlight, the spots will darken. You will also develop more sun spots as you spend time in the sunlight. The most unusual aspect of sun spots is that you do not need to expose the areas to direct sunlight to have them darken. Sun spots grow darker even when sunlight is reflected off of a window, sidewalk or other reflective surface. The reason for this is that the ultraviolet rays from the sun bounce off these surfaces. Tanning beds are also linked to the development of sun spots.

Sun Spots Treatment Benefits

Unlike age spots, sun spots can develop at any age. The primary benefit of sun spots removal is to prevent the skin from darkening further. Men and women often have sun spots removed for cosmetic reasons.

Where Can Sun Spots Treatment Be Applied?

Sun spots removal treatments at Downtown Dermatology can be applied to any area of the face and body. Dr. Hicks-Graham will recommend treatments that take into consideration the location of your sun spots.

How is Sun Spots Treatment Administered?

At Downtown Dermatology, we offer several treatments for sun spots removal. Depending on the location, severity and number of sun spots, Dr. Hicks-Graham may recommend laser resurfacing or chemical peels.

Sun Spots Treatment Preparation

We recommend that you avoid exposure to sunlight, either directly or indirectly, until after your sun spots are removed. If the spots darken or if you develop new sun spots, this will complicate your treatment.

Sun Spots Treatment Recovery

Depending on the sun spots removal treatment that you receive, the area may appear red and irritated for the first one to two days. You should avoid sunlight until the area is completely healed. We also recommend that you use sunscreen because your sun spots indicate that you are at higher risk for developing skin cancer.

How Much Does Sun Spots Treatment Cost?

Sun spots removal is considered elective by your medical insurance, so you will be responsible for the total cost. Our patient coordinator will provide a cost after your consultation. We accept payment by cash, check, major credit card and CareCredit® financing.

Is Sun Spots Treatment Right for Me?

If you have dark patches or spots on your skin, we recommend that you meet with Dr. Hicks-Graham for a consultation. She will evaluate your sun spots and also perform a skin cancer screening.
