Cysts

Cysts in Columbus, OH

If you have a bump on the surface of your skin or notice a small lump just under the skin, you may have a cyst. Cysts can develop anywhere on your body and should be evaluated by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Shari Hicks-Graham of Downtown Dermatology, serving the residents of the Greater Columbus area in Ohio.

What are Cysts?

The term “cyst” describes a range of small sacs that may be filled with air, fluid or another substance. Cysts can develop anywhere on your body. Dr. Hicks-Graham categorizes the cyst based on where it is on your body. Common types of cysts are:

  • Subcutaneous cysts that are found in the hair follicles and oil glands
  • Breast cysts
  • Ganglion cysts that occur on the tendons of the hand or wrist
  • Ovarian cyst that develop on the ovaries
  • Pilonidal cysts that develop at the top of the buttocks
  • Chalazia, a type of cyst that occurs in the oil glands of the eyelid

Cyst Treatment Benefits

Most cysts are non-cancerous, but some may be a type of cancer. Dr. Hicks-Graham will provide you with an accurate diagnosis so that you feel confident about the outcomes of treatment. Her recommendations will include options that will eliminate the cyst and reduce symptoms, such as:

  • Impact on surrounding blood vessels and nerves
  • Infection
  • Impaired organ function
  • Enlargement of the cyst

If she determines that your cyst is related to cancer, she will help you find the resources you need for treatment.

What Areas Can Be Treated for Cysts?

Treatment is adapted to the type and location of the cyst. Dr. Hicks-Graham may recommend:

  • Draining fluid from the cyst
  • Surgical removal of the cyst
  • Injections and other medications to treat the cyst

What Can I Expect From Treatment for Cysts?

The initial result of cyst treatment is relieving your symptoms. The cyst may still feel tender, but you will be more comfortable than you were before treatment. The recommended treatment is based upon what caused your cyst, such as:

  • Infection
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Blocked ducts, such as tear ducts and oil glands
  • Certain medical conditions

Cyst Treatment Preparation

You should schedule a consultation with Dr. Hicks-Graham to have your cyst evaluated. Prior to your appointment, you may be able to alleviate the symptoms to a degree with some home care. We recommend using warm compresses on the cysts to promote draining. You should not try to drain the cyst by squeezing it or pricking it with a needle. Doing so may open the area to infection and exacerbate the problem.

Cyst Treatment Recovery

If Dr. Hicks-Graham drains the cyst, she may recommend that you keep the area covered for a period of time to prevent infection. She may prescribe antibiotics or topical creams to promote healing. You should use these medications as directed. Dr. Hicks-Graham will monitor your progress to ensure that treatment is effectively addressing the cyst. If the cyst does not heal or if it returns, she may recommend surgery.

How Much Does Treatment for Cysts Cost?

Treatment for cysts is covered under medical insurance, and you will be responsible for the co-payment, deductible, and co-insurance. We accept payment by cash, checks, and major credit cards. If you are interested in making affordable monthly payments for your cyst treatment, you can apply for financing through CareCredit®.

Is Cyst Treatment Right for Me?

Most cysts will heal without any medical intervention. If the cyst causes a great deal of pain, is located on your breast or appears as an abnormal growth, you should be evaluated by Dr. Hicks-Graham. If the cyst is diagnosed as cancerous, she will advise you about other specialists who can provide cancer treatments.
